On my way around the web, trying to think of an intriguing topic to write about, I came across a piano playing jazz composer from Japan. Her name is Hiromi Uehara and she can fly on the keys. I watch a few different concerts of her trio on YouTube and came across one with a familiar name, actually one who I have mentioned in previous blog posts (Piano’s Underground & Remembering IAJE), Oliver Jones.
After first hearing of Hiromi, I did some typical music research on Wikipedia and found out she plays a lot of experimental jazz, rock, classical and fusion piano styles, which I am all a fan of. She also has very crazy hairstyles, just search her name in YouTube and watch some of the clips.
The clip I saw of Hiromi and Olvier Jones was during a rehearsal before their show. How it played out, Hiromi started playing Oscar Peterson’s “Place St. Henri” and Oliver Jones sat down on the end of the seat and started playing on the lower octaves. As I mentioned in my previous posts about Oliver Jones, he was a student of Oscar Peterson’s growing up and a lifelong friend, so it’s easy to believe that he knows most of Oscar’s songs. Enjoy….
